Why Changing Air Filters Is Important

Regularly changing your furnace filters is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, clean filters promote better indoor air quality by trapping dust, pollen, and other allergens, thus reducing respiratory issues and allergies. Secondly, clean filters ensure efficient airflow, allowing your furnace to operate smoothly and evenly distribute heat throughout your home. This efficiency leads to lower energy bills and extends the lifespan of your furnace by reducing strain on the system. Additionally, clogged filters can cause overheating and potential damage to the furnace components, resulting in costly repairs. By simply replacing your filters regularly, you can enjoy improved air quality, energy savings, and prolonged furnace life, making it a smart and cost-effective maintenance practice.

Unveiling the Mystery of MERV Filters: What You Need to Know

What is MERV Rating?

You may have encountered the acronym "MERV" while browsing for air and furnace filters, but what exactly does it signify? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. In essence, it quantifies the effectiveness of a filter in trapping airborne particles and contaminants. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter is at capturing these pollutants.

Reasons Why MERV is Important

  1. Health and Safety: As a homeowner, ensuring the well-being of your family is paramount. MERV-rated filters play a crucial role in maintaining indoor air quality by minimizing the circulation of dust particles, allergens, and other harmful substances.
  2. Cost Considerations: Contrary to popular belief, the superiority of MERV 11 filters over MERV 8 filters isn't always straightforward. While higher MERV ratings generally imply better filtration, factors such as pricing and specific filtration needs should also be taken into account.
  3. Optimal Home Comfort: Adequate airflow is essential for regulating temperature and mitigating allergens within your living space. Typically, MERV ratings falling between 8 and 11 suffice for most households. However, individuals with respiratory conditions may benefit from higher MERV-rated filters.

Unveiling MERV: A Comprehensive Overview

MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, was conceptualized by the American Society of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) engineers to provide consumers with insights into filter performance. Here's a breakdown of key points surrounding MERV filters:

  • Range and Development: MERV ratings span from 1 to 16, with some specialized filters reaching up to 20. These ratings signify the filter's ability to trap particles of varying sizes, thereby aiding in the reduction of indoor air pollutants.
  • Quality Assurance: When purchasing MERV-rated filters, it's advisable to opt for those manufactured in North America to ensure quality standards are met. Filters originating from less regulated regions may compromise on efficacy and durability.
  • Maintenance Guidelines: While MERV ratings offer guidance on filter efficiency, it's imperative to adhere to recommended maintenance practices. Factors such as proximity to construction zones, pet ownership, and allergies necessitate more frequent filter replacements.
  • Alternative Rating Systems: Apart from MERV, other rating systems like MPR (Micro-Particle Performance Rating) and FPR (Filter Performance Rating) exist. These systems provide additional insights into filter capabilities and are endorsed by prominent brands such as 3M and Honeywell.
  • Expert Recommendations: For optimal performance, MERV 11 filters are often recommended due to their ability to trap a significant percentage of airborne particles. However, individual circumstances and preferences should dictate the choice of filter rating.

Understanding MERV ratings empowers homeowners to make informed decisions when selecting air and furnace filters. By prioritizing indoor air quality and considering factors such as filtration efficiency and maintenance requirements, households can create a healthier and more comfortable living environment. Whether it's combating allergens or enhancing overall well-being, harnessing the power of MERV-rated filters is a step towards a cleaner, safer home.

When talking about furnace maintenance, you’ve probably heard over and over about changing the filters. When your air filters become dirty, it reduces the airflow through the system, which makes the furnace work harder to circulate the air, which reduces the furnace’s lifespan. Changing the filter is easy, but if you need help, call your local furnace service company for an appointment.

However, unexpected glitches can disrupt comfort. When facing heating woes, leverage the expertise of our Enercare furnace specialist and follow these comprehensive steps to pinpoint a solution.

Your Essential Guide to Furnace Repair

What are the signs that indicate my furnace needs repair?

Signs indicating your furnace needs repair include strange noises like banging or whistling, uneven heating throughout your home, frequent cycling on and off, a sudden increase in energy bills, and visible signs of damage or rust on the furnace unit.

How often should I schedule maintenance for my furnace?

It's advisable to schedule furnace maintenance at least once a year, ideally before the start of the heating season, to ensure optimal performance, prevent breakdowns, and extend the lifespan of your furnace.

What are the most common issues that require furnace repair?

Common furnace issues requiring repair include faulty thermostats, clogged filters, ignition problems, malfunctioning pilot lights, worn-out belts or bearings, and issues with the blower motor or fan.

How much does furnace repair typically cost?

The cost of furnace repair varies depending on the nature and extent of the problem. Minor repairs like replacing a thermostat or cleaning a filter may cost between $100 to $300, while major repairs such as replacing a blower motor or heat exchanger can range from $500 to $1500 or more.

Is it possible to troubleshoot furnace problems on my own, or should I always call a professional?

While some furnace problems can be troubleshooted by homeowners, such as checking the thermostat settings or replacing a dirty filter, complex issues and repairs involving electrical components or gas lines should always be handled by a professional technician to avoid safety hazards and ensure proper repairs.

What steps can I take to prevent future furnace problems?

To prevent future furnace problems, homeowners should regularly replace furnace filters, schedule annual maintenance inspections, keep vents and registers clear of obstructions, ensure proper airflow by keeping doors and windows sealed, and address any minor issues promptly before they escalate into major repairs.

How long does a typical furnace repair job take?

The duration of a typical furnace repair job depends on the nature and complexity of the issue. Minor repairs may take a few hours to complete, while major repairs or replacements may require several days, especially if parts need to be ordered.

Are there any safety concerns I should be aware of when my furnace needs repair?

Safety concerns when your furnace needs repair include the risk of carbon monoxide leaks, gas leaks, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. It's important to shut off the furnace and contact a qualified technician immediately if you notice any signs of these safety issues.

Should I repair or replace my furnace if it's experiencing frequent problems?

Whether to repair or replace your furnace depends on factors such as the age of the furnace, the frequency and cost of repairs, energy efficiency, and the extent of the problem. A general rule of thumb is to consider replacing a furnace if it's more than 15 years old or if the cost of repairs exceeds 50% of the cost of a new unit.

What credentials and experience should I look for in a furnace repair technician?

When choosing a furnace repair technician, look for credentials such as certifications from organizations like NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America), licensing, insurance, and experience working with your specific type and brand of furnace. Additionally, read reviews and ask for references to ensure quality service and expertise.

Furnace Troubleshooting Tips

  • Evaluate the Thermostat: The thermostat serves as the furnace’s command center. Begin troubleshooting by ensuring correct configuration and adequate power supply. From battery checks to temperature settings, meticulous assessment is key to uncovering potential issues.

  • Replace the Furnace Filter: A clogged filter stifles airflow, impeding heat circulation. Regular filter replacements – ideally biannually or more frequently – are crucial to furnace efficiency and longevity.

  • Verify Power Supply: Confirm the furnace’s power source, checking switches and breakers for proper functionality. Attention to detail here can often preempt more complex electrical issues.

  • Reset Tripped Circuit Breakers: Tripped breakers can disrupt power flow to the furnace. Methodical inspection and resetting procedures are imperative to restore functionality.

  • Clear Ventilation Pathways: Obstructed vents hinder heat distribution. Vigilant monitoring and maintenance of indoor and outdoor vents ensure unimpeded airflow, optimizing furnace performance.

  • Secure Front Panel: A securely closed front panel is essential for safe furnace operation. Ensure proper closure to prevent inadvertent shutdowns due to safety mechanisms.

  • Seek Professional Assistance: Should troubleshooting efforts prove inconclusive, professional intervention is warranted. Qualified technicians possess the expertise to diagnose and address complex furnace malfunctions promptly and effectively.

They responded immediately within hours after our furnace died. Denis provided professional service and quality products in case replacement needed. While a little more expensive than competitors we were impressed enough with service to have them install new one. The work was completed by Diego the next day who communicated all the changes to operating new furnace and further advise on how to improve hearing of home. So far so good.

I really liked how they didn't try and over-sell me anything. We needed both a furnace and hot water tank, and the sales person told us our options and what was realistic for us. It was great.
The installers we fantastic and hilarious! I have never had someone sing while installing anything in our house, but it made our day listening to them.
Thank you for such great service. We will be return customers.

The staff were very friendly in all of our interactions, and made it a pleasant experience. We haven't had the ducts sealed long enough to know whether it makes a difference in our energy bills or furnace efficiency, but I was really happy with the service.

The only thing for potential customers to be aware of is that the process does take quite a few hours - we were told two hours when booking, and it was more than double this once you include the time to set up.

Thank you Sheldon, Braden & team.
They don’t try to up sell or get you to sign up for a membership or pay a extra fees. Luv your work & products!

A week after having a new water tank installed, an internal leak was causing the pilot light to go out leaving us with w/o any hot water. Called and they dospatched Dave to come out that morning but only to report that the leak was from a defective tank and required replacing which would cost us $0.00 being under warranty. As his day was already filled with other booked calls (understandably), we were placed first on the roster for the next day. Dave and his helper arrived first thing in the morning and had the tank replaced in approx 1 hour. True to AIC standards, they were professional in their work ethic and got the job done.
